Meudon sometimes spelt Mewden, Mwedon, Meuden, Mudon, Muedon, Mueden was first mentioned in 1250 by Adam Meuthen in relation to him witnessing the benefice of Constantine. The final spelling came courtesy of the French, during the Napoleonic Wars when, as a prison, it was named after their eponymous home village in the environs of Paris.
The village of Mawnan Smith, not to be confused with Mawgan or Mawgan Porth, has been home to 4 hotels of the Pilgrim family; Budock Vean Hotel from 1929, Nansidwell Hotel from 1938, Trelawne Hotel from 1955 and Meudon from 1966.
