Country House peace and quiet with ample grounds or gardens.
Accommodation standards star grades
Star ratings, from one to five, are used to assess the standard of the quality you can expect for hotels and bed & breakfast accommodation.
Rosette ratings for restaurants
Rosettes are awarded annually to AA inspected restaurants for the quality of their food. Most star-rated hotels have their own restaurants and we also inspect these. Not all restaurants receive an AA award, but will generally serve enjoyable food of a reasonable standard.
AA Merit Score of 85%
In addition to the star classification, hotels recieve an AA merit score in the form of a percentage. This indicates the level of quality achieved within each star rating and will help you to compare hotels with the same number of stars.
What the AA said about Meudon:
"This charming late Victorian mansion is a relaxing place to stay, with its friendly hospitality and attentive service. It sits in impressive nine-acre gardens that lead down to a private beach. The spacious and comfortable bedrooms are situated in a more modern building than the main house. The cuisine features the best of local Cornish produce and is served in the conservatory restaurant."

What the Best Loved Hotels said about Meudon:
A secluded garden retreat in picturesque Cornwall
Nestled on the south Cornwall coast in thickly wooded countryside, Meudon represents a haven of peace and beauty. This former mansion is surrounded by exquisite Cornish gardens, with ferns that are the envy of Kew Gardens themselves, and a private beach at Bream Cove.
The hotel's interior is filled with antiques, oil paintings, log fires, Wilton carpets and fresh flowers. The bedrooms, all with private bathrooms, are light and airy and enjoy splendid views over the garden.
The garden views extend to the Meudon's elegant restaurant, where emphasis is on fresh local seafood and vegetables. Lobsters and crabs are brought straight from the sea by local fishermen while oysters are reared at the nearby Duchy of Cornwall oyster farm. Game, Cornish cream and vegetables are grown by local farmers. A judicial list of wines from around the world complement the menu. Meudon is the perfect centre for the explorer, rich in natural beauty with endless places to visit. You can play golf at six fine Cornish clubs (free in high season), charter the hotel's own yacht, complete with skipper, and cruise the coastline, enjoy the breathtaking coastal walks, or just laze on the beach!

Wise readers take care in choosing a hotel guide, just as they do in selecting a hotel. Most guides require hotels to pay money to be included, often many thousands of pounds.
The Good Hotel Guide takes no payments and accepts no advertising or hospitality. All the hotels included in the Guide are recommended by readers who share our mission of discovering and celebrating high-quality independent hotels. Over the past 28 years, this approach has earned us a reputation for accuracy, independence and integrity.
What the Good Hotel Guide said about Meudon:
'Old-fashioned values' prevail at the Pilgrim family's traditional hotel in wooded countryside on the south Cornish coast. It stands in a subtropical 'hanging garden', at the head of a valley that leads down to a beach. 'We don't know how many times we have stayed in the last 25 years,' one couple wrote. Other returning visitors add: 'Our room was immaculate, serviced morning and evening. Shoes properly cleaned.' Other comments: 'Staff are professional, friendly, but not obtrusive. They left a tea/coffee tray in our room, having remembered that we don't like early morning tea brought by a maid.' 'A pleasant stay in a well-run hotel.' 'A bright, clean room. Thankfully no chintz.' 'Relaxed and friendly; lovely garden, good position.' All the bedrooms now have double-glazed windows; four have been refurbished. The Pilgrims (father Harry and son Mark) 'encourage a dress code of jacket and tie' in the restaurant where the chef, Alan Webb, uses local produce, including fresh fish from Newlyn, for his English dishes on a daily-changing menu. 'British cooking at its best.' 'More than adequate portions, a wide choice.' (Ken and Mildred Edwards, AJW and HM Harvey, LM Mayer-Jones, Bob and Barbara Edwards).

What the Johansens said about Meudon:
Set against a delightfully romantic backdrop of densely wooded countryside between the Fal and Helford Rivers, Meudon Hotel is a unique, family-run, superior retreat with sub-tropical gardens leading to its own private sea beach. The French name originates from a nearby farmhouse built by Napoleonic prisoners of war and called after their eponymous home village in the environs of Paris. 9 acres of sub-tropical gardens are coaxed into early bloom by the Gulf Stream and mild Cornish climate; Meudon is safely surrounded by 200 acres of beautiful National Trust land and the sea. All bedrooms are in a modern wing, have en-suite bathrooms and each enjoys spectacular garden views. Many a guest is enticed by the cuisine to return: the fresh seafood, caught by local fishermen, and the kitchen's commitment to using local Cornish ingredients creates superb dishes alongside wines from a judiciously compiled list. Rich in natural beauty with a myriad of watersports and country pursuits to indulge in, you can play golf free at nearby Falmouth Golf Club and 5 others in Cornwall, sail aboard the hotel's skipperd 34-foot yacht or just laze on the beach.
Our Inspector Loved: The newly presented en-suite bedrooms, and magnificent gardens.
