We have taken significant steps to address the concerns raised by the local community regarding our development plans. The hotel has therefore recently submitted a revised planning application aimed at the sensitive enhancement of our facilities and historic gardens, hoping to strike a balance between modernisation and preservation.
Listening to the Community
The journey to the revised plans hasn't been easy. Two previous applications were rejected by Cornwall Council in September 2022 and November 2023. Despite planning officer support, the proposals faced opposition from a number of local residents, leading to the council's refusal of the application. Recognising the importance of community feedback, we have refined our plans to address these concerns, while securing the future of the hotel and its horticultural heritage.
Nigel Chapman, Chairman of Kingfisher Resorts, Hotel Meudon’s parent company, expressed his thoughts on the matter: "We were surprised and dismayed by the local opposition to the last submission, which had planning officer support. But we appreciate that the hotel is situated in a highly sensitive area of natural beauty. It’s therefore incredibly important that any development is well-managed and carefully considered."
A New Vision for Hotel Meudon
The revised plans reflect a thoughtful response to the community's feedback. Key modifications include:
Reduction in Accommodation Units: The number of new units has been reduced from ten to six.
Removal of Adjacent Field from application: Except where required for mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain.
Nigel Chapman highlighted the importance of these changes: "Having taken on board all of the comments, we are confident that the revised plans will enable Hotel Meudon to remain at the heart of the community as a viable business. With a horticultural legacy dating back to the early 1800s, we don't take our stewardship of the gardens lightly. However, without the proposed development, it will be financially impossible for the hotel to continue to operate or maintain this peerless subtropical paradise."
Community Benefits
If approved, the new plans promise numerous benefits for local residents:
Priority Leisure Membership: Locals will have priority access to a new, year-round, outdoor heated 20m infinity swimming pool with a spa.
Enhanced Dining Options: A casual dining restaurant 'The Retreat' will be added, enhancing the hotel’s current food and drink offerings.
Job Creation: The development is expected to create over thirty new full time jobs, boosting the local economy.
Looking Forward
In tandem with submitting the revised plans, Hotel Meudon has also lodged an appeal against the November 2023 refusal. However, Nigel Chapman remains hopeful: "If we are able to get support for the scaled-down plans, this will negate the need to go ahead with the appeal."
Our efforts reflect a commitment to both preserving Hotel Meudon's historic charm and evolving to meet contemporary needs. The revised planning application represents a careful balance of sensitivity and progress, aiming to secure a vibrant future for both the hotel and the local community.
As the community awaits the council's decision, there is a renewed sense of optimism that these thoughtfully revised plans will pave the way for a harmonious development that honours the past while embracing the future.
