Notes from the Head Gardener - Spring Bloom

The Seasonal Splendour of Hotel Meudon Gardens

Spectacular Springtime

Each season has its own unique treasures that can be found in the Woodland or Terrace gardens here at Hotel Meudon, however, springtime is particularly spectacular. Many species of plants lay dormant over the winter months and start growing again as the temperatures rise, creating a real sense of awakening after a long winter slumber. At the beginning of each week, I'm always intrigued to see what will be next to burst into bloom.

It's always a thrill to see new growth burst through the spaces in the nettles and brambles that I have pruned or cut away over the autumn and winter, resulting in a noticeable increase in native and non-native wildflowers. There is now a glorious abundance of Forget-me-nots, Helleborus Orientalis (Christmas Rose), Trillium, Asarum Caudatum (Wild Ginger), and Wild Primrose (which is a magnet for a beautiful array of butterflies). During medieval times, it was common practice to farm primrose and it was often consumed as part of a salad, as both the leaves and flowers are edible. The cultivation of primrose actually predates the appearance of lettuce in British agriculture!

Giants Awakening!

Spring is also a time of sleeping giants waking up and coming into bloom. The garden here at Meudon is home to some of the largest rhododendrons and magnolias in the country, and in early spring they fill the upper and mid-canopy of the forest with a flood of pink and red blossoms. The magnolias produce an abundance of massive, bud-shaped flowers in pink and white hues that seem to float among the branches like exotic butterflies. In late spring, the 30-foot tall mimosa tree with its feathery leaves bursts into bloom with an array of pink flowers that gradually turn yellow towards August. This is a time of observation, a time of learning, as no two years are exactly the same. The flora that fills the gardens at Meudon are stunning year-round, but particularly during this season, offering a sight that is both breathtaking and humbling.

A Cornish Wonderland

Walking the winding paths of Hotel Meudon in spring is an experience that engages all the senses. The air is perfumed with the sweet fragrance of blossoms, while birdsong fills the morning hours as nesting pairs establish territories and attract mates. The gardens benefit from Cornwall's unique microclimate, which allows for the cultivation of exotic species that would struggle elsewhere in Britain. Subtropical plants thrive alongside native species, creating a botanical wonderland that surprises visitors at every turn. Camellias in shades of scarlet, pink, and pristine white provide early colour, while azaleas later join the display with their vibrant pastels, fiery oranges and reds. Our collection of hydrangeas is especially noteworthy, with varieties selected for their dramatic blooms and extended flowering periods. As spring transitions to early summer, these begin their spectacular display, producing massive flower heads in blues, purples, and pinks depending on the soil's acidity levels in different parts of the garden. Water features throughout the garden come alive in spring as well, the reflective surfaces of our ponds doubling the visual impact of the surrounding blooms, while providing habitat for frogs, newts, and dragonflies. The sound of water trickling over stone adds another layer to the sensory experience of the garden, creating natural music that complements the rustling leaves and bird calls.

Wild and Beautiful

The gardening team at Hotel Meudon work year-round to enhance these natural spaces, but we're careful to maintain a balance between managed areas and wilder sections where nature can take its course. This approach has led to an increase in biodiversity, with more species of butterflies and bees visiting our gardens each year and we've established specific pollinator-friendly zones planted with nectar-rich flowers that provide food sources from early spring through late autumn. Guests are encouraged to explore the gardens at different times of day, as the changing light transforms the landscape. Morning dew catches the early sunlight, creating countless tiny prisms, while evening brings a softer, golden glow that bathes the gardens in warm light. Each visit reveals something new—perhaps a flower that wasn't open the day before, or a shy woodland creature going about its business among the undergrowth. The gardens at Hotel Meudon aren't just beautiful; they're a living testament to the cycles of nature and the rich horticultural heritage of Cornwall. They remind us to slow down, to observe the small miracles that unfold daily in the natural world, and to appreciate the fleeting beauty of each season as it comes.
